Grade 2 violin

ABRSM syllabus

Scales and arpeggios, violin grades 1-5

Posted by Owain on 4 November 2011 - 12:04pm

Edited on June 8th 2013: Please note that the Grade 4 scales have been corrected. The older version included D major rather than E major - a rather embarrassing and problematic error!

This follows the new ABRSM violin syllabus for 2012 onwards, including the new option for even notes rather than long tonics. I've included the fingerings I prefer to teach, such as starting two octave scales high on the G string in later grades, and three octave arpeggios shifting across the perfect fourths.

Scales and arpeggios: Grade 2 violin

Posted by Owain on 17 October 2011 - 6:19pm

The only change here for the 2012 syllabus is that A minor is no longer required, and that the option of natural minor scales is included.

These diagrams only show the harmonic minor pattern, which I believe to be by far the most commonly-played in exams. If there's any demand for it, though, I'll modify it to include the others.

Edit: for those who want note names on the diagrams, you can use the relevant pages from here.

Schubert: Heidenröslein

Aside from the beautiful singing, this also shows wonderful communication among the players in the orchestra. Watch for the ways they use eye contact, to be able to play so well as an ensemble without a conductor.
Saw a boy a little rose, little red rose on the heath, young and lovely like the morning. So he ran to have a close look at it, and gladly did. Little rose, little rose, little red rose on the heath.
